The 5 Must-haves for Yoga

 UPDATED December 3, 2024

Whether you’re just starting your yoga journey or you're a seasoned practitioner, the right yoga props can transform your practice. They provide support, enhance alignment, and help you deepen poses safely and effectively.

Below, I’ve compiled my top five must-have yoga props, all of which I use and recommend. These tools not only make your practice more accessible but also help you connect more deeply to each pose, bringing a sense of ease and confidence to your practice!

Equally important is having a quiet, sacred space when you practice at home. You don’t need a large area—a cozy corner of your bedroom can work beautifully. However, you need to let members of your household know this is your time for uninterrupted focus, so you can fully immerse yourself in the practice.

Here are five essential items you want to consider for your yoga practice:

1. Personal Yoga Mat

Your yoga mat is an essential item to own, especially for your hygiene.

If you do not own one yet, you can research and find numerous inexpensive yoga mats. This is a good place to start, especially if you are new to yoga and are unsure what type of classes you’ll attend.

When your yoga practice becomes a regular weekly or daily routine, I recommend investing in a high-quality option like Manduka.

High-quality yoga mats can be expensive however, in my opinion, they are worth the investment for their durability and the ease they bring to your practice
.

2. Yoga Blocks

Yoga blocks are essential for both beginners and seasoned yogis. They offer support and stability in poses, helping to maintain proper alignment and avoid strain.

Blocks can extend your range of motion and help you reach and hold poses comfortably. Whether you're deepening a stretch or needing extra support, a pair of sturdy yoga blocks can enhance your practice.

3. Yoga Blankets

Yoga blankets are invaluable accessories. They help to create comfort and support in your practice. I highly recommend at least two, however, three to five blankets are preferred

Yoga blankets provide warmth during final relaxation in cooler weather and offer cushioning for your head, neck, or spine.

Yoga blankets are versatile and provide comfort and support. They cushion joints, support restorative poses, and keep you warm during relaxation. I recommend these durable and cozy Mexican blankets.

4. Yoga Strap

A Yoga Strap is a simple apparatus to help beginners and folks with limited range of motion.

Straps are used for stretching and lengthening for a wider range of motion.

If you do not need a fastener, you may use an old necktie, scarf, towel, or even a rolled yoga blanket instead of a yoga strap. Or you can explore my favorite Yoga Strap here.

5. Yoga Mat Cleaner

Keeping your yoga mat clean is essential for both hygiene and longevity. Yoga mats are a breeding ground for bacteria and germs.

Different yoga mats require different care, so be sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Some yoga mats can simply be wiped down with warm water and soap, while others might require a specialized mat cleaner.

For natural rubber mats, a DIY solution of white vinegar and essential oils can help restore grip and prolong durability.

Another go-to cleaner is this homemade spray or with Thieves Cleaner. It’s effective, eco-friendly, and leaves my mat smelling clean and fresh!

With these five essentials, your yoga practice can be more comfortable, effective, and enjoyable.

Whether you’re focusing on alignment or creating a relaxing atmosphere, these tools have you covered.
